The Quake and Its Far-Reaching Impact

The Pacific Rim recently experienced a significant seismic event, as a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's far eastern coast, triggering widespread tsunami warnings and evacuations across multiple nations. This powerful quake is tied for the sixth strongest ever recorded.

The earthquake occurred off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, around 11:24 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning (01:25 PM HST 29 July 2025). It was exceptionally shallow, at a depth of just 20.7 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage because the energy released does not have to travel far to reach the earth's surface, and in this case, its location near the coastline triggered a tsunami. Tsunami waves can travel at speeds of around 700 kilometers (435 miles) per hour, like a jet plane.

The tsunami's first waves hit Russia and Japan. In Russia's Severo-Kurilsk district, near the epicenter, a state of emergency was issued as tsunami waves lashed the coast, tearing boats from their moorings and carrying away storage containers.
