Amid growing concerns over the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, Dr. Atul Goel, an official from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), has urged the public not to panic. He emphasized that HMPV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes mild symptoms, similar to those of the common cold, but it can pose risks to the elderly and young children.
Dr. Goel clarified that based on data from December 2024, there has been no substantial increase in respiratory infections in India, and there have been no reports of widespread outbreaks from healthcare institutions.
He highlighted the importance of general precautions to prevent respiratory infections, such as avoiding close contact with infected individuals, using a separate handkerchief or tissue for coughing and sneezing, and taking over-the-counter medications for cold and fever symptoms.
While there is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, prevention remains the key strategy. Hospitals are already prepared for seasonal increases in respiratory illnesses during winter, with adequate supplies and beds in place.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with international health agencies.
Meanwhile, global concerns have risen following reports of the respiratory virus outbreak in China, drawing comparisons to the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged China to share more data regarding the outbreak. In response, Chinese authorities have defended their transparency, stating they have fully cooperated with global origin-tracing research.
Dr. Goel reassured the public, emphasizing that the situation does not warrant alarm and that standard precautions against respiratory infections are sufficient at this stage.
